Elijah listens to Grunge

Alright, so I’ve been sick all week, and the last thing you wanna do when you’re sick is to post something serious or intellectual on your blog. Quite frankly, the brain feels like mush and when I’m sick I’m way too self-absorbed to be helpful.

So a bit of fun instead…

I’ve been reading the Elijah and Elisha narratives in the OT and it reminded me just how cool these two guys were. I mean, Mount Carmel showdown, cursing youths who then get mauled by bears… These prophets got attitude.

And so I thought… mmm… I wonder what music Elijah and Elisha would listen to, were they alive today? The first thing that came to mind was ‘grunge’. Dunno why, but maybe it was the attitude thing.

So then I thought, why not compile a fun list (with your help) of Bible people and their ‘music of choice’ (can be songs, or bands even)… Leave your thoughts in the comments below. The more the merrier.

To get us started:

Ezekiel – psychadelic rock (with the emphasis on psychadelic)

Jonah – Emo all the way (actually, probably a lot of OT prophet types would suit emo)

King Eglon – Meatloaf (remember them?)

Samson – “Eye of the Tiger” and any other Rocky type songs. Or perhaps “Beach Boys” (I wish they all could be Philistin-ia girls)… mmm…

Over to you!

  1. John the Baptist was definitely a ‘flower power’ kinda guy…I’m thinking ‘The Mammas and Pappas – California Dreamin’

  2. I can also imagine Paul heading from town to town to the tune of ‘The Bee Gees – Stayin’ Alive’…

  3. John the Baptist – “Born to be wild” (Steppenwolf)

  4. And little known Shamgar from Judges would have killed 600 Philistines to the ‘Wong Fei Hong’ theme song… 600 people with an oxgoad (about 1 metre long…). C’mon…there’s gotta be some serious Kung-Fu going on there…

  5. Elijah when on Mt Carmel – “Light my Fire” (The Doors)

Found a strong contender for hip-hop and rap: Jephthah… he’s so gangsta!

  7. I reckon Jeremiah would like listening to a band like The Smiths. He’d appreciate their blend of wistful lament, depression and alienation.

And Hosea could definitely get down to Kanye’s latest album, which is filled with the angst of his fiancee’s walking out on him.

(Oh, and hate to be a stickler, but Meatloaf is a guy, not a band!)

  8. There is but one.

    Jesus –

    “For the Glory of Love”

    by Peter Cetera.

    That is all.

  9. I know I’m almost a year late to this blog post, but it needs to be pointed out that these holy men of the bible would not listen to unholy music. Elijah and John the Baptist were set apart, eating simple food, having simple dress, and rebuking the apostasy in the church and the kings of their day. Certainly their rebuke today would include the glorification of that satanic law “do what thou wilt” found in pop music today.

  10. Hey u guys made me laugh, sometimes we tend to forget that these people were normal. They properly would not listen to filthy songs, but the genres you picked deffinately fit their personalities.

    What about Elisha?

Love the staying alive for paul

  11. FFH “Big Fish” for Jonah
